BOOKS

BOOKS

Book consists of written or printed sheets of paper or some other material fastened together along one edge so it can be opened at any point. Most books have a protective cover. Books are a
reasonably inexpensive and convenient way to store, transport, and find knowledge and information. The book thus ranks as one of humanity's greatest inventions.
People have used books in some form for more than 5,000 years. In ancient times, people wrote on
clay tablets, strips of wood, or other materials. The term book comes from the early English word boc, which means tablet or written sheets. The first printed books in Europe appeared during the mid-1400's. Since then, millions of books have been printed on almost every subject and in every written language. Young readers are familiar with storybooks, textbooks, workbooks, and comic books. We often consult almanacs, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and telephone books for reference.
We read novels, books of poetry, and printed versions of plays for entertainment.
The pages of a book are glued or sewed together along one side, called the spine or back. Two covers are joined by hinges to the spine. Books are either hardbound or softbound, depending on
the cover. Most hardbound books have covers made of cloth, plastic, or leather over cardboard. A
paper dust jacket is often added to protect the cover. Softbound books, called paperbacks, have
paper covers. Usually, the book title and other information appear on a book's spine and front cover
as well as on its dust jacket.
Inside the front cover of a typical book is a collection of pages called the preliminary material. The material begins with a blank or decorated end paper, followed by the half-title page. The recto (front
side) of this page carries the book's title. The verso (back of the page) may be blank, or may carry a list of other books by the same author. Throughout the book, the verso is always an even-numbered page and the recto is always odd-numbered.
The title page carries the full title of the book and the author's name on the recto. It also carries the imprint, which is the place and date of publication and the name of the publisher or company issuing
the book. The verso of the title page contains additional publication information and a statement of copyright, which is a notification that the book's contents are the property of the author or publisher.
In the earliest printed books, the information now carried on the title page appeared at the end of
the book in a statement called the colophon. The illustration that faces the title page is called the frontispiece.
The preface follows the title page. In the preface, the author discusses various aspects of the
creation of the book. The table of contents usually comes at the end of the preliminary material. It lists in order the book's main topics or the headings of the individual units and their page numbers.
The text is the main part of the book. The text is usually divided into separate parts called chapters
or books. The text may also include illustrations. In many books, several sections follow the text.
The appendix contains notes, charts, tables, lists, or other detailed information discussed in the text. Many books have an index, which lists in alphabetical order important subjects, names, and places in
the text. The index gives the page number where the reader can find these items in the text.
Finally, some books have a bibliography that lists sources used by the author in writing the book. The bibliography also lists additional sources on subjects in the text.

Learn How To Effectively Persuade Others

Through Writing

Writing a persuasive essay can be creative and fun. It is one of the writing formats that are covered in the English Composition course. Following a few basic guidelines can help you write an influential and convincing essay. First, you must understand the purpose for writing persuasively. This style of writing gives reasons, with supporting material, to convince the reader to take a specific action.
To commence, you must determine the purpose or goal of the essay. You can ask and answer questions like "What action do I want to persuade people to take? Why is this action important to me?" It is also essential that you know who the audience will be. Once you have answered these questions and selected your goal, you are ready to write the body.
Introductions are extremely powerful. Effective introductions do more than state the goal. If properly written, it can command your reader to sit up and pay attention. An authoritative introduction can be written in a few different ways. Ask a question - This tactic stimulates the reader's mind and forces him or her to make an attempt to answer a question. Describe a scene - This appeals to the reader's imagination and emotions. Make a startling statement - This is intended to shock the reader with a surprising fact.
Supporting information gives your argument credibility, so include strong reasons that back up your goal. It is best to elaborate on each reason, supplementing them with facts and examples, not opinions. Facts give information that can be proved. Explain why the reader should do what you suggest. It is a good idea to list specific reasons as to why the reader should support your goal.
Use various techniques to make your reasons convincing. First, contemplate how the reader might disagree with your reasons. Second, anticipate and answer possible objections within the essay. Third, appeal to the reader's sense of fairness. Fourth, link your reasons to ideas the reader already has about what is right and what is wrong. Fifth, persuade through emotions. Lastly, connect your reasons to feelings you and the reader may share.
Your argument is your reasons, which are supported by detailed facts and examples. Be careful to organize your argument so that it is convincing and persuasive. You can either start with your most important reason, to gain the reader's attention. Or, end the argument with the most important reason in order to leave the reader thinking. Be sure to state your reasons in the topic sentences.
Conclusions are just as powerful as introductions, so you will want to make the conclusion forceful. This can be in the form of a personalized appeal to call the reader to action. You can use a thought-provoking end warning, predicting what might happen if action is not taken. Or, you can wrap up your argument with an unusual or interesting comparison.

A Successful Speech

Key Elements to a Successful Speech

A successful speech has a number of key components. It has the power to capture the attention of people and to keep them emotionally involved even after the story has come to its conclusion.
Writing a successful speech is difficult. Few people are capable of captivating the attention of the audience and making the entire presentation intriguing.
A successful speech has to be short enough, original, personalized and provoking an emotional response. Sounds easier said than done. To write a successful speech, you need to put your heart, soul and creativity in it. Knowing the audience well enough is another important component.
Originality
A cliché has the power to spoil the best of speeches. At the same time, writing an original speech can be challenging.
Staying away from clichés is one of the most important components of a successful speech. It has to be written in your own way and it has to tell your side of the story. Trying to utilize a writing model and choosing words that are atypical for your own speech will interfere with your success.
Clichés are widely known and people will never get surprised or emotionally touched by a speech that is full of commonplace phrases.
Sense of Humor
Some of the best speeches will make people laugh. A clever joke and a funny line are much more powerful than a wise and abstract statement.
Everyday life is troubling and difficult. People have many problems to worry about. A humorous speech will make them feel good and it will touch their hearts in a way that no other presentation can.
Use your sense of humor. Still, you need to be careful with jokes. Rude jokes, sexual content or ones that focus on ethnic traits and stereotypes should be kept out of the speech. The sense of humor used needs to be witty, subtle and positive.
Personalization
Some people believe that a good speech needs to address general issues that will be understood by the average listener. This understanding is 100 percent wrong.
A great speech has to be personalized. The more specific it is, the better. Your speech is your chance to address issues of interest rather than common topics. Pick an angle that is unique, personal and very special.
Even if you have to speak of common issues, you can do it in your own way. Select something unusual, a tiny detail that can become the focus of a very original and unique speech. Being afraid to put your thoughts and ideas in it signifies creating a mediocre speech.
Brevity
Great speeches are short. By default, long and meandering speeches will get people bored and losing interest.
Say what you have to say and once you are done, just stop. Three to four paragraphs will do just fine in terms of presenting your ideas, getting the audience involved and delivering a great conclusion.
Even if a long speech sounds fancy, try to refrain from falling into that trap. People have a short attention span. Managing to capture their attention is far from keeping them involved throughout the speech.
A successful speech has to be original, personalized and presented in your own special way. As long as you are brave enough to make the speech your own, it will be a major success.

HOBBY...

HOBBY
Hobby can be any type of activity that people do during their leisure time. Most people take up a hobby for relaxation, pleasure, or friendships, or to develop new interests. A hobby can also lead to additional income.
People of almost any age can enjoy hobbies. A hobby offers a way to relax after periods of hard
work. Hobbies offer broadened areas of interest and ways to pass the time pleasantly. Hobbies can
be important in helping patients recover from physical or mental illness because they provide distractions from the patients' problems. For people who are ill or bedridden, hobbies offer fascinating ways to pass the time. Hobbies can also be an important form of occupational therapy.
In the past, hobbies were largely limited to the wealthy. The average person was too busy earning a living to find time to pursue a hobby. People today generally have more leisure time because of
higher incomes and improvements in working conditions. In addition, most people also live longer and retire from their jobs at an earlier age. To fill their free time, they often develop interests in
hobbies.
Kinds of hobbies
Almost any kind of leisure activity can become a hobby. Most hobbies fall into one of four general

categories, which may overlap. They are (1) the arts, (2) collecting, (3) handicrafts, and (4) games and sports.
The arts provide outlets for hobbyists with a special interest in such art forms as dancing, drama,
painting, graphic arts, and music. Each art form has many separate possibilities for a hobby. For example, music may include singing or playing an instrument. Painting offers the hobbyist a wide choice of materials, such as oil paints or water colors.
Collecting is probably the most widespread kind of hobby because almost anything can be collected. Stamps and coins are probably the most popular collected items. Hobbyists also collect such things
as autographs, comic books, costumes, and baseball cards.
Handicrafts attract hobbyists who can work skillfully with their hands. Many hobbyists engage in needlework activities, notably crocheting, needlepoint, knitting, and sewing. Hobbyists use kits to make model airplanes, boats, and trains. Using woodworking tools, they can create carvings,
furniture, and bowls. Other handicrafts include ceramics, metalworking, jewelry making, weaving, batik, and leatherworking.
Games and sports are popular with many hobbyists who enjoy competition, physical activity, and healthful exercise. Thousands of hobbyists take part in sports, such as bowling, fishing, mountain
climbing, skiing, and tennis. These sports give hobbyists the opportunity to display their individual skills and sportsmanship. Popular indoor games include bridge and other card games, backgammon, chess, and Monopoly.
Other hobbies. Electronics-related hobbies are becoming increasingly popular. Many hobbyists enjoy flying model airplanes by remote control or assembling and operating ham radios. Both young
people and adults have taken up computers as a hobby, frequently assembling computers from kits. Some people raise pets as a hobby. For many people, gardening and photography are rewarding hobbies.

Problems in Learning English and How to Improve Them

Problems in Learning English and How to Improve Them

Are you having difficulty learning English? Are you saying to yourself “If only I could learn English better, I could do so much more.”? If you are answering yes to these questions, I’m sure you’re wondering how you can do that. In this article, I would like to explain some problems many English learners face, and ways to improve your English that are simple and can be fun at the same time.

Problems in Learning English :

Poor English Vocabulary

Vocabulary is important when learning a language. Any language, of course including English, has thousands and thousands of words. In many cases, even those native speakers of the language do not know all the words of that language. there are just too many to learn. In fact, according to many sources I have come across, there are only 800 words that you must know to converse in English. That list is too long to display here, but a good start is to read through that list and see how many words you know. You may surprise yourself in the amount of words you are familiar with. I have posted a vocabulary list on World English Club, and you can go to it and use our English vocabulary learning method described below. Another problem people face in learning English vocabulary is that they learn new words, but they tend to forget what they have learned quite soon after the just learned them. So what can you do?

How to Improve your English Vocabulary :

There are games to play and methods to learn to improve your English vocabulary. The best simple method I want to suggest is this; just make a list. Now there is more to it than just making a list, so keep reading. Once a week, make a list of twenty five words using the World English Club Vocab lists, or choose words from other popular websites. As you are compiling (or making) your list, make sure to write down the definitions if you are unsure of them at the time. Do your best to study and learn these new words. Now break the list down into five words a day. On your first day, study your first five words. On your second day, study your next five words. Now here’s the trick; after your second day of your five vocab words, try to write down yesterday’s words. On your third day, study day three’s words, and then try to remember and write down day two’s vocab words. Are you seeing a pattern yet? I hope so. Do this for five days, and on your sixth day of vocabulary learning, try to write all your vocab words for the last week. Take your time, and do your best. When you are done, review those words and see what you remember. If you use the method above, I guarantee you will improve your english vocabulary and not forget the words you have learned.

Poor English Speaking Skills :

One of the biggest complaints I hear about when one is learning a new language, is their inability to communicate successfully. Whether it is an issue with reducing their accent, or not knowing the vocabulary or grammar to create a decent conversation, many people struggle with poor speaking skills. People assume that learning grammar in a classroom or studying vocabulary words will help them speak a english as a language. But those factors only gain you knowledge of the English language and cannot translate into real conversational English skills. Are you having problems with English speaking skills? Here are ways to improve your English speaking skills.

How to improve your English Speaking Skills :

Have you tried to watch a movie in English? I’m sure you have. It is one of the easiest things to do while studying and learning english. But what is it about watching movies that is a good idea? I’ll tell you; it’s hearing the words spoken out loud. So there is one thing that I’m sure you haven’t thought of to mirror this learning effect, but it will make a bigger and better improvement on learning English speaking skills. Read a book. Well, it doesn’t have to be a book, but it needs to be in English. Now here’s the trick; As you are reading this book, read it OUT LOUD. Yes, it is as simple as that. Reading out loud will let you hear your English and at the same time, help you gain more confidence in speaking English. It does not have to be for a very long time. But you should read out loud for at least five minutes a day. Do not give up on this. I think this is an important method to practice and not enough people practice in this manner. Make sure you are pronouncing your words, and if you have to read slowly, that’s ok as well. The point is that you are speaking out loud and practicing speaking English. Since many English learners do not have the opportunity to interact with native English speakers, this is one of the best methods to help improve your english speaking skills. Which brings me to my final learning English problem.

Not enough interaction with English speakers :

Not being able to have interaction with native english speakers can be a great hindrance on one who is learning English. But there are many things you can do to help improve your interaction with native english speakers, or at least to simulate this experience. Which, let’s face it, is probably the most important part of learning a new language. Interaction. So here are some things you can do.

As you all are aware, watching movies is a good idea. You can learn slang words and, if you are interested in learning to speak like an American, there are a lot of colloquialisms and Americanisms (as I like to call them) that are difficult to learn about simply by reading. to learn colloquialisms, a person must hear the words and phrases in context. So by watching movies, there can be no way in which you, as a learner, can mistake or misunderstand the meaning of  words or phrases.

One way (and I think this is the best way) that many English learners do not think of, is finding an native English speaker in a chat room or English learning website and chat with them via Skype or other internet voice service. There are plenty of people who would love to just talk with you over the phone or internet to help you learn. Or maybe you can offer to teach them a little of your language in return. That way everybody gains something from the experience. If you are in a country or city where you do not have the opportunity to find a native english speaking friend, chatting on the phone or internet is the next best thing.

If you are lucky enough to know an english speaker that you can meet with (and it should be someone you are comfortable with so as you are trying to speak, you will not be shy), try to meet them in a comfortable place that you can hear each other speak and just spend about an hour talking about any topic that comes to mind. You can also plan some topics to talk about so you don’t waste your time thinking of things to say. Maybe write down questions you have or have them ask YOU questions so you can practice answering them.

There are plenty of other problems in Learning English but I think these are the three main reasons. I guarantee that if you know these pitfalls and know how to avoid them, every aspect of your English learning will be improved. And you will be a native English speaker in no time. Good Luck.

Speak English Through Games

Speak English Through Games

Learn to speak English is hard, but it need not be boring. When using games for learning to speak English, you can have fun while continuing to learn. The struggle to beat your challenger or get a high score may inspire you to study and learn more often. Computer games for outdoor activities, there are a number of games you can use to learn to speak English.

Speak English Through Games

In both games, players must use the descriptions and definitions to bring their partners to guess the word they have drawn. This will improve your vocabulary and use of synonyms. When you play with English-speaking friends, you can practice your pronunciation.

Change typical of outdoor sports and indoor games in the games to teach English by asking players to say a complete sentence about the game before trying to score points. For example, you may request a sentence before a beat tries to hit the ball or to determine who gets control of the basketball in a game.
